As longtime old-house lovers (and as the son-in-law and daughter of a historic preservationist), Spillian co-founders Mark and Leigh have seen the revered historic architecture magazine Old House Journal as a kind of Mecca. We’ve pored over decades of copies, gaining inspiration and insights for several restoration and renovation projects.

Having Spillian featured in Old House Journal feels a little unreal. As Mark said, “it’s like winning the Oscar to an old house geek.” (We’ve been polishing our acceptance speeches…)

Our thanks to writer/editor Mary Ellen Polson, who joined us for a gathering celebrating Robert Burns a while back, and advocated hard on the mansion’s behalf to her head editor, as they rarely feature buildings that are being used commercially. She caught the essence of Spillian beautifully. As did the truly brilliant architecture photographers, Steve Gross and Susan Daly.

Check out their work in the article about Spillian, “New York Mountain Camp,” and Mary Ellen’s musings on the extraordinary painted walls in the house as well!

We are so grateful to have Spillian included in the decades of memorable homes featured by Old House Journal. If you’d like to learn more about the property’s history, there are a lot of tidbits here.
