Twelfth Night: A Feast of Fools

The Lord of Misrule, Shakespeare, and Merriment to End the Holiday Season

Saturday, January 4, 2025

Join us for a last blast of celebration in honor of the end of the twelve days of Christmas!

Long before New Year’s Eve became a thing, Twelfth Night once echoed with a splendid upside-down revelry that challenged any strait-laced ideas of power, identity, and what constitutes good behavior. We will join together and co-create an evening worth of such illustrious (or, more accurately, irreverent) lineage. We will laugh January into submission in a Renaissance-inspired romp. And yes, you can most absolutely come dressed as a fool!

  • Join us for the day/evening for Afternoon Revels. A Reveling Feast & Pig Roast & Festivities or…
  • Stay the night: The Full Revel – Afternoon Revels, Cocktails, Feast & Festivities and an Overnight Stay

Advance Reservations Required.

The Schedule

1 to 4 PM: Afternoon Revels. We will play together as we prepare for the evening. There will be frolicking, capering, and gamboling…

  • Foolish Revels: Learn about the rich and revolutionary history of Twelfth Night celebrations so we can revel deeply together.
  • The Spillian Reveler’s Shakespeare Company: All the world’s a stage, and now’s your chance to become a player in our stage reading of a brilliantly fast and furious short version of Shakespeare’s iconic comedy, Twelfth Night! We will gather in the afternoon to bring some semblance of order to chaos and prepare to trod the boards and chew all available scenery in the evening. The perfect way to do theater! No memorizing of lines and anything goes…
  • The Bar will of course be open to invite your inner jester to come and play. And there will be Spillian snacks, so the jester doesn’t get completely out of line. Yet.

5 PM: Cocktails and the Crowning of the Lord of Misrule
In addition to our regular bar offerings, we’ll be evoking Renaissance renaissance flavors of the season:  hippocras, a spiced wine flavored like cinnamon and ginger; a house-infused version of mulberry gin; and  aqua vitae – the water of life – brandy. And we’ll present the King’s Cake, complete with a bean inside to crown our Lord of Misrule for the evening.

6 PM: A Twelfth Night Feast from Chef Christian Van Etten
Chef Christian has gone full out with flavors for carnivores and vegivores…and he’s roasting a pig!

7 PM: Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare & the Spillian Revelers Shakespeare Company
We will speak the speeches trippingly as we split the ears of the groundlings, and our sides with laughing at our foolish selves as we bring the adventures of Viola, Sebastian, Sir Toby Belch, and all of their loves and tormenters to life. Adapted and directed by Cat Yudain and Ian Potter, theater artists from NYC and marriers at Spillian last summer!
