Embrace the true horrors of winter on a weekend dedicated to scaring you silly. We’ll start the afternoon with a virtual escape room game, savor werewolf-inspired feasting and drink, and top the evening off with a genius of scares and laughter mash-ups. The acclaimed horror-comedy movie Werewolves Within was filmed on location at Spillian, and director, writer, comedian, and all-around camp horror genius Josh Ruben will be joining us along with friends to introduce his work on screen and his new illustrated novel, Darla. See the movie that stars (at least in our minds) Spillian and learn where the bodies are hidden…
Right before the world shut down in a crazy global pandemic, Spillian was visited for three months by the creative team who made Werewolves Within. Spillian both served as the primary location for the Beaverfield Inn and the production headquarters for the three-month shoot.
Josh and the irrepressible Jean-Michel of the Hudson valley’s Mecca for comic books, Megabrain Comics will savor the connections between fear and laughter, introduce a showing of Werewolves Within from within the house where the horrors happened (along with a tour of spots that might look a bit familiar to you), a bunch of fascinating conversation on movie making and what Josh is up to creatively these days, and a food station feast that honors horror films. About Josh Ruben
Josh Ruben is a native of Woodstock, NY best known for his feature films SCARE ME, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and WEREWOLVES WITHIN, which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. In 2021, WEREWOLVES won a Midseason Hollywood Critics Association Award for “Best Indie.” Both films were filmed in the Hudson Valley.
WEREWOLVES WITHIN landed in over 30 “Best of” features, including many “Top Films of the Year” and “Top Horror Movies of the Year” lists in 2021, alongside major studio horror releases such as A QUIET PLACE 2 and the Palm d’Or winning TITANE. Most notably, Entertainment Weekly highlighted the “fabulous, hilarious performances of its deep-bench cast,” and Forbes gave the film its #1 pick for Best Horror, adding “it’s hands down one of the most fun films of the year.” Recently, Vulture listed WEREWOLVES WITHIN as the #1 Best Rated Video Game Movie out of a list of 50 films.
In addition to producing, directing, and writing, Josh is also a performer best known for his performances in Travis Stevens’ horror film, A WOUNDED FAWN which received rave reviews after its 2023 TriBeCa Film Festival premiere, and the improvised comedy series MAKE SOME NOISE on Dropout TV.
The Schedule
- 5:00 PM Cocktails (themed of course…) and a werewolf-worthy foraged feast of small bites to fill your beast belly.
- 7:00 PM Josh and Jean and pals will kick the evening off, and talk movie production and introduce Josh’s brilliant horror/comedy comic, Darla, exploring the disturbing underbelly of Americana through politics, health, psychosis and murder. (Yum!)
- 7:30 PM Popcorn and drink in hands, we’ll watch Werewolves Within together. See if you can guess where each scene was shot!
- 8:45 PM Answer any question of Josh and Jean and be assured of a brilliant and most often sidesplittingly funny answer…
