Join us in this magical\, mythical summertime ritual of rebirth. It can change everything. \nA Little Background \nThe birth of the Mythological ToolBox® emerges from an annual gathering on Joseph Campbell’s birthday. As he celebrated\, he would explore Carl Jung’s wondering\, “What myth am I living by?”— and when he realized that he didn’t know\, writing “I took it upon myself to get to know ‘my’ myth\, and I regarded this as the task of tasks.” He concluded\, “That’s what a birthday is for.”  Since 1988\, after his death\, friends and newcomers to Campbell’s work have been gathering to celebrate life and explore ‘their’ myths. Eventually these festivities were dubbed “A Mythological ToolBox” to acknowledge that familiarity with Campbell is not needed to retool the myths that shape one’s life — though a sense of humor certainly helps. \nIn what is emerging as a rich tradition at Spillian\, we are delighted to offer the fifth Mythological ToolBox® PlayShop at Spillian in 2018. This is an intimate\, luxurious adventure into Campbell’s ideas and your own mythologies\, with a small group and fine food in an exquisite place. \nThe workshop is facilitated by our good friend and colleague Robert Walter\, Joseph Campbell’s editor for a decade\, president of the Joseph Campbell Foundation\, and a poet/playwright with several decades of experience as group leader\, teacher\, publisher\, and theatrical producer/director/designer. \nJoseph Campbell\, 1904-1987 \nOur mix of individual\, small-group\, and collective activities will provide opportunities for both reflection and expression. Thank you! \nSpillian’s Meadow\nThree years ago our first SpillianFest introduced the public to “The Meadow\, ” our gorgeous outdoor stage built into the old stone foundation of one of the original Spillian buildings. It was a revelry attended by more than 500 guests. Since then our magical meadow has hosted weddings\, workshops\, and gatherings. This summer\, we’re thrilled to introduce a new rustic pavilion\, handcrafted from trees from the property. \n  \n\nThe Music\nAbout Bill Duke and the Hyzer Hillbillies\n\nA local favorite folk and bluegrass group\, led by Bill Duke and his high lonesome tenor. \nThe Hyzer Hillbillies caught their name rolling down Hyzer Hill in Delaware County\, and finesse a combination of covers and original songs including the hit single “Hickster Man” on guitar\, banjo\, harmonica\, various things to drum on\, and the occasional shovel. Hey\, it’s Delaware County! There are two rocks for every dirt…everybody needs a shovel… \n  \n  \n\nAbout Yard Sale\n \nRoots experimentalists in the tradition of the Band\, Neil Young\, Dr. Dog\, and The Avett Brothers\, Yard Sale’s fluent playing and roughhewn\, uncorrected vocal virtuosity often transcends folk\, approaching the sop \nhistication of casual chamber music\, but always in the service of sturdy\, eccentric and emotionally stirring songs. Like the best of today’s smart indie Americana artists (including some of their Team Love Records label mates)\, Yard Sales plays freely with American myth\, haunted spirits\, and weird old styles but does so in a way that is less studied\, less groomed\, and more stylistically inclusive than many of their steadfastly retro peers. Learn more!  \n  \nAbout Dylan Doyle\n \nSouthern born\, Northern raised \, Dylan Doyle has been steeped in everything from Bob Dylan\, Wes Montgomery\, and Bill Withers to John Prine\, Jimi Hendrix\, and The Band.  From this comes a unique musical interpretation that lies somewhere within the delta of Roots\, Rock\, and Jazz\, giving him a style that defies classification. Touring nationally since age 15\, Dylan became a seasoned professional at a very young age.  He has played with such notable musicians Rob Stoner (Bob Dylan\, Don Mclean)\, John Platania (Van Morrison\, Natalie Merchant)\, Ben Cauley (Otis Redding) and Bill Payne (Little Feat).  Stoner called Dylan one of the most prodigious players he has known with abundant natural talent.  John Platania has referred to Dylan as “The Future.”  Ben Cauley\, after playing with Dylan in Memphis said\, “Dylan Doyle sounds like a young Jimi Hendrix.”  In the words of Bill Payne upon sharing the stage\, “Music is a conversation.  Dylan spoke beautifully and was listening to the musicians around him.  His play was imaginative and original. Attesting to Dylan’s versatility\, Dylan has played the King Biscuit Blues Festival three consecutive years as well headlining the Grateful Garcia Gathering\, the largest Grateful Dead festival in the Midwest\, and consistently packs houses around Europe and the United States. \n  \n\n

Join Guggenheim Fellow and acclaimed teacher and playwright Robert Smythe for a workshop that will unlock the secrets of making plays in high summer in the Catskills. This intimate intensive is perfect both for new and emerging writers as well as seasoned pro’s. \nCreating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive will focus you on knowing what exactly you are trying to say to an audience\, instead of how you are saying it. We’ll take the general themes and concepts that first led you to conceive of writing a play — or acting in one — and make them specific. \n[btnsx id=”9146″] \nDetails\nWe’ll work on getting the story out of your head and into a form that can be understood and interpreted by the other artists you will eventually direct\, perform beside or inspire. By the time you finish the first five-minute exercise\, you’ll be surprised at what you have inside you. During that time he wrote\, directed and performed over 20 original productions using puppets\, masks and human actors\, winning numerous awards and honors\, including four Barrymore Awards for himself and 13 for the company. He also led Mum on international tours on four continents. \nRobert is the recipient of Guggenheim\, Pew\, NEA and six Pennsylvania Council on the Arts fellowships\, and six Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theater in areas ranging from education to choreography. According to Philadelphia City Paper\, Smythe’s work with Mum “sparked the theater renaissance that continues to this day.” He was the first artist to receive a commission from the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts in 2008\, and the resulting collaboration between him and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, Stravinsky’s “l’Histoire du Soldat\,” won the 2011 Barrymore Award for Outstanding Collaboration. \nHe is the founder of the Playwriting Program for the International Puppetry Conference at the Tony-winning O’Neill Theater Center. His work on motor contagion was been published in Acta Psychologica; his ground-breaking application of narrative theory to puppetry\, “Reading a Puppet Show: Understanding the Three-Dimensional Narrative\,” was published in The Routledge Companion to Puppetry and Material Performance. By triangulating the perspectives of traditional tracking (pattern reading)\, living systems thinking (pattern thinking) and regenerative design (pattern design)\, we can relearn to see with Nature’s mind and act as essential members of this living world with essential roles She is literally dying for us to play. \nBecause all living systems follow the same patterns\, learning to read them reveals where and how we can contribute to growing their health. We need to learn how to be open observers\, clearing the mirror of our minds to see behind the surface to the workings of the life of systems and how to find our place as active participants within them. \nThis workshop will be useful for designers\, artists\, and practitioners of all sorts\, as well as anyone interested in awareness and seeing the world in a different way. It is open to all levels of abilities. Though we will be using our bodies\, it will not be overly rigorous and appropriate for all physical abilities. Filled with fire\, with possibility\, with fortune\, and with danger\, dragons refuse to be bound by rules. \nHow do we see and embrace this power in ourselves\, even when we aren’t sure we can? How can we learn to ride this fire enough so it doesn’t burn ourselves or the people around us? And at the same time\, how can we understand that its very nature resists being tamed? You can learn more about them here and make your choice on the registration page.\n_________________________________________\nAbout Leigh Melander\, Ph.D.\nLeigh has an eclectic background in the arts as well as consulting in strategic planning\, outreach and marketing\, and event planning for over 20 years. She has performed\, and taught and facilitated explorations of imagination and creativity internationally\, working with individuals and groups to help them find their way to bringing their wild ideas to life. \nHer undergraduate degree is in performance\, literature\, and history from Penn State\, and she studied writing by invitation with Nobel Poet Laureate Derek Walcott at Boston University. She has a doctorate in cultural mythology and psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute and wrote her dissertation on frivolity as an entry into imagination. She has has appeared in various media outlets\, including the History Channel\, as a mythology expert\, and has published articles in Spring Journal\, The Routledge International Handbook of Jungian Film Studies\, The Mythology CD-ROM. She hosts a weekly radio show on an NPR affiliate and podcast: Myth America\, an exploration into how myth shapes our sense of identity and serves as the Vice President of the Joseph Campbell Foundation and the editor of their MythBlast series.

It can change everything. \nA Little Background \nThe birth of the Mythological ToolBox® emerges from an annual gathering on Joseph Campbell’s birthday. As he celebrated\, he would explore Carl Jung’s wondering\, “What myth am I living by?”— and when he realized that he didn’t know\, writing “I took it upon myself to get to know ‘my’ myth\, and I regarded this as the task of tasks.” He concluded\, “That’s what a birthday is for.”  Since 1988\, after his death\, friends and newcomers to Campbell’s work have been gathering to celebrate life and explore ‘their’ myths. Eventually these festivities were dubbed “A Mythological ToolBox” to acknowledge that familiarity with Campbell is not needed to retool the myths that shape one’s life — though a sense of humor certainly helps. \nIn what is emerging as a rich tradition at Spillian\, we are delighted to offer the fourth Mythological ToolBox® PlayShop at Spillian in 2017. This is an intimate\, luxurious adventure into Campbell’s ideas and your own mythologies\, with a small group and fine food in an exquisite place. \nThe workshop is facilitated by our good friend and colleague Robert Walter\, Joseph Campbell’s editor for a decade\, president of the Joseph Campbell Foundation\, and a poet/playwright with several decades of experience as group leader\, teacher\, publisher\, and theatrical producer/director/designer.
