Can you recall the feeling?  That threat in your surroundings that predates your most distant ancestors? Where every creek and crack in the natural world that cradles you gradually and begins to grow more ominous? That unutterable sense that mother nature doesn’t care about you – and maybe you are just her next meal!  \nJoin celebrated British actress and voiceover artist Victoria Finney for her candle-lit atmospheric reading of Algernon Blackwood’s 1909 supernatural psychedelic horror story\, The Willows. A sensory immersion\, this storytelling performance saturates audience members in an eerie odyssey to otherworldly realms guided only by the simple elements of sound\, light and spoken word. The piece is adapted and directed by Alex Harvey.  \nBorn in 1869\, Algernon Blackwood was the first pioneer of Supernatural Fiction and is renowned for his masterful atmospheric settings in his paranormal tales\, which submerge readers in the experience of the story itself. A member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn—a secret society devoted to the study of the occult and esoteric knowledge—Blackwood had an outsized and often underappreciated influence on the horror genre. The Willows creates a narrative bridge that connects gothic horror of the 19th century to psychological horror of the modern age. Blackwood’s ability to evoke dread from natural settings and his use of the unseen to generate fear lays the groundwork for modern horror’s exploration of existential dread. Blackwood was a major influence on H.P. Lovecraft\, who praised The Willows as “the finest supernatural tale in English literature.” \nSet on a flooding sandbar in the Danube as it crosses from Austria into Hungary\, the narrative of The Willows lures us into the disorienting inward journey of two campers on a summer canoe trip. Amidst the ceaseless and whispering dance of miles and miles of willow bushes along the river’s ancient banks\, these two adventurers are ensnared by forces that they dont understand. They are pulled\, as if by the hands of unseen specters\, into a realm where reality warps and the fabric of the known world frays into the inexplicable. Further and further they fall into the grasp of wild nature’s whim and closer to the edge of sanity. In its crescendo\, this odyssey leaves a haunting reminder of the fragile barrier that separates our mundane existence from the unfathomable mysteries that lie beyond. \n\nAbout Victoria Finney\nVictoria Finney performed all over the UK & Europe for many years with theatre companies including The English Shakespeare Company and Shared Experience\, appearing in several TV drama series and as a storyteller and Radio Rep actor for the BBC. Eventually Vicky moved to New York with her family.  Here she has been part of the Lake Lucille Chekhov project\, including the film “I am a Seagull”\, and has performed at The Lincoln Center and off Broadway. She co-founded Off The Page Arts-In-Education company\, taking experiential residencies into public schools all over the city. She co-adapted/directed All American Boys (now published and available from Playscripts) and has also co-adapted White Rose by Kip Wilson supported by The New Victory Theatre\, NYC and The Alliance Theatre\, Atlanta. She is currently featured as the narrator and storyteller on two popular children’s podcasts and plays a bunch of instruments and sings with Brooklyn based band\, The Retro Fits. \n  \nAbout Alex Harvey\nAlex Harvey is a filmmaker\, editor\, producer\, writer\, theater director\, musician\, end-of-life doula and currently the Arts Programmer at Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield\, MA. It comes from the same root word as rebel and frivol…delightful reveling rebellion is in our blood. This summer\, in the mountains that have birthed protest music that has changed the world\, we’re offering a unique chance to rebel with piped piper extraordinaire\, Carsie Blanton. \nAnd in that spirit\, we’d like to celebrate a small but important bit of rebellion fighting against the corporatization and globalization of the food industry: an emerging project to bring our Catskills farmers\, restaurateurs\, and hoteliers so we can all thrive. The Kirkside Virtual Food Hub will break the craziness of food going from Delaware County to NYC just to come back for sale\, and build truly fresh\, truly local food\, its story and connections to our residents and visitors so we all can thrive. The Kirkside Virtual Food Hub is a brainchild of The MARK Project and its flagship effort to invent new ways to bring community and visitor resources together in learning and play at the Inn at Kirkside. \n5 PM: Join us for a summery picnic featuring flavors from our local farms by our Chef Christian Van Etten\, featured local beers and cocktails\, and exciting news about the Virtual Food Hub. \n7 PM: Carsie and her fab cat bass player will join us for a 7 PM show that will have you roaring to change the world. \nThe Menu! \n\nGreek Lemon Potato Salad with Mint (V | VG | GF)\nSmoked Pulled Pork Sliders on House-Made Parker House Rolls\, Red Onion Jam\, Kimchee & Arugula\nZucchini Fritters with Smoked Trout\, Corn Crema\, Pickled Scallions (GF)\nZucchini Fritters with Smoked Carrot\, Corn Crema\, Pickled Scallions (V | VG | GF)\nSweet Sesame & Lime Cabbage Salad (V | VG | GF)\nElote Charred Corn Salad (V | GF)\nChef Christian’s Bruschetta Salad with House-Made Baguettes (V | VG | GF without baguettes!)\nBlackberry Corn Cobbler (V )\n\nFeatured Cocktail: The Trout Tale \nLocal vodka\, mint from our garden\, seltzer\, and a splash of local maple syrup. \n  \n\nThe Music: Carsie Blanton\n \nCarsie Blanton is a songwriter with hooks\, chutzpah\, and revolutionary optimism. “It is possible to face the world as it is – rapidly heating\, ruled by grifters\, ravaged by profitable wars – and still have hope\,” she says of her newest release\, After the Revolution\, produced by Grammy-winner Tyler Chester. “Not the narrow\, grasping hope you might hang on an election or a billionaire\, but a patient\, zoomed-out hope.” Inspired by artist-activists including Nina Simone and Woody Guthrie\, her catalog careens through American popular song from folk and swing to pop-punk protest anthems. \nWith her unique mix of humor\, craft\, and social critique\, Blanton has amassed a small menagerie of viral hits (Rich People\, Shit List\, Fishin’ With You) and a dedicated fan base. In addition to fifteen years on the road with her band\, Blanton volunteers as a political organizer\, and was recently published in The Nation.  \n“Beautiful\, militant anthems.” – Ken Tucker\, NPR’s Fresh Air \n“Carsie Blanton is fighting fascism with big hooks and an even bigger heart.” – American Songwriter \n\nThe Kirkside Virtual Food Hub\nA next-gen vision for how our local farmers and our local restaurants can strengthen one another and the region. For over 150 years\, the Catskills’ economy has been largely driven by independent small farmers and hoteliers. In this era of corporate food\, it has become very (even at times absurdly) difficult for restaurants to get food from local farms onto their tables\, despite best intentions and efforts. The Kirkside Virtual Food Hub will be a solution to this: bringing these communities together with a powerful set of digital and transportation tools that will build connections and resources\, including: \n\nDevelop forecasting tools for farmers to anticipate restaurant needs and plant to order rather than on spec\, removing a layer of farming risk and building their resilience.\nStrengthen restaurateurs’ abilities to elegantly reflect the seasons and terroir of the Catskills in their menus and better understand and reflect the stories of this place and why local food matters.\nCut the ‘grow in the Catskills\, ship to NYC and ship back to the Catskills’ current distribution channels and provide direct transport of local foods to local tables in the moment at peak freshness.\n\nThis is an initiative of the Inn at Kirkside\, a flagship effort by the regional community foundation\, the MARK Project\, transforming the historic Kirkside Estate into a hotel/restaurant with an integrated educational program that provides experiential learning to aspiring professionals in the hospitality and tourism industries\, encourages and cultivates entrepreneurship\, serves as a model of green technologies\, and supports the local food producing system. You can check out the Virtual Food Hub visioning plan here! \nSpillian is proud to be partnering with the Virtual Food Hub; we believe that it’s a seriously cool vision to strengthen the area\, both economically and culturally\, and build environmental and social equity for our local community. \nBUY TIX NOW!

SUMMARY:Breathing Fire: A Wild Power Workshop for Women | February 2-4
DESCRIPTION:Breathing Fire: A Wild Power Workshop for Women\nFebruary 2-4\, 2024\nFacilitated by Leigh Melander\, Ph.D.\, Spillian Co-Founder\nAre you burning to change your life and the world? \nJoin us for a weekend celebrating the fire we hold in us\, the dragon fire of the Catskills mountains\, and the embers of fire festivals traditionally celebrated in winter and early spring to imagine the power and life of the coming year. \nIn most cultures\, women have been traditionally defined by three roles: maiden\, mother\, and crone. Each is a powerful metaphor\, each has value\, but they all live within society’s expectations.  They are often as much about how the world sees women as they are how we see ourselves. \nThere is another metaphor\, one that acknowledges women’s power\, our wildness\, and how we often stand outside the constructs of society. \nAnd that is dragon. Filled with fire\, with possibility\, with fortune\, and with danger\, dragons refuse to be bound by rules. \nHow do we see and embrace this power in ourselves\, even when we aren’t sure we can? How can we learn to ride this fire enough so it doesn’t burn ourselves or the people around us? And at the same time\, how can we understand that its very nature resists being tamed? How can we navigate the risks of unleashing this fire in a world that is often terrified by it? \nExplore your own fair fierceness through story\, movement\, and imagination. \nReserve Now!\n\nWhat to Bring\nWe invite you to bring an idea to work\, an activity to dive into\, a piece of your own dragon self to share. What brings you fire? And what might ignite your fellow dragons? We will gather and co-create the flames together\, celebrating our power together. If you’re not sure what you might bring with you\, please feel free to reach out. And if you’re curling around the edges at the idea\, never fear – we will have lots to share. \n\nAbout Leigh Melander\, Ph.D.\nLeigh has an eclectic background in the arts as well as consulting in strategic planning\, outreach and marketing\, and event planning for over 20 years. SUMMARY:The Hallowed Haggis: A Robert Burns Celebration | January 20
DESCRIPTION:The Hallowed Haggis:\nA Robert Burns Celebration\nJanuary 20\, 2024\nWe all know January–the time of the year when holiday delights have faded into the snow and the dark cold nights of winter threaten despair… We have an antidote: The Hallowed Haggis: A Robert Burns Celebration. \nCome push against the darkness\, and join us for a seriously silly celebration of the words and song of the Ploughman Poet\, Robert Burns. Indulge your whimsy\, and join in the revelry as we enjoy the smoky taste of great whiskey\, the play of candlelight against silver\, the wail of the bagpipes\, the Spillian Haggis Games\, and a great feast of the Hallowed Haggis… Hilarity will ensue. \nWhat the hell is Haggis\, you ask?  Its liver\, tongue and other unmentionable bits together with Scottish oats\, onions\, stock and herbs all cooked together into “the great chieftain o’ the pudding race.” Put away your mocking thoughts\, and know that this is one delicious bit of pie.  And\, in deference to those who think it is truly terrifying\, we will offer haggis to taste alongside Chef Christian’s superb takes on much more accessible Scots carnivorous and vegetarian fare…\n \nOur co-founder Leigh Melander and our great friends and colleagues\, theatre artist Robert Smythe and textile artist Susan Smythe\, will be co-directing the delights of the weekend and spurring you on to great Haggis heights. And John “Johnny Piper” McGovern will be evoking the highlands and bringing us into line with his bagpipes throughout the evening. \nJoin us as we push back winter’s dark cloak with games\, verse\, drinks and superb food\, all invoking – and evoking – your inner Highlander. \nThree ways to play: \n\nCome for the evening: Saturday Robert Burns Supper & Festivities\nCome for the day: Saturday Haggis Games\, Robert Burns Supper & Festivities \nStay the night: The Full Haggis – The Haggis Games\, Supper\, Festivities and Overnight Stay\n\n\nPlease join us! Space is limited\, so advanced reservations are required.\n \nReserve Now!\n\nThe Haggis Games\n\n1 to 4 PM: The Spillian Haggis Games\, a superbly silly array of activities and competitions to get your inner Highlander primed for the Robert Burns Feast and contests. We’re still putting final touches on this year’s game plan\, but here are some of the ridiculousness we’re considering…\n\nA Scots Dialect Lesson: Och\, aye… Land in the language of Burns and explore your talent for accents and/or a touch of moxie. Click here for a list of Robert Burns poems you can practice on.\nAn Ode to an Ode: A guided chance to release your inner poet and create an ode to that which you love\, to share at the dinner table with your fellow celebrants and competitors. Fear not! Even if your inner poet is shy; sublime or absurd\, we’ll help you get to full-on poet status for the evening.\nTo the Toasts!: How to hold the heart and soul of what you’re honoring as you make a toast that will ring in the memories of all who join us.\nRad Plaid Pads: Invent your own plaid as you weave your own hot pad holder. (Crafts for grownups!)\nThe Spillian Auld Lang Syne Orchestra Rehearsal: Kazoos await those who are brave enough to become a member of the band. Only the smallest modicum of musical talent required…bravado counts. (And those of you who actually play instruments\, feel free to bring yours and help guide the mayhem.)\nThe Bar will open at 1 PM if you need some liquid courage\, and we’ll have some Spillian-made snacks on hand for noshing in the afternoon.\n\n\n\n\nThe Robert Burns Feast & Festivities\nA family style feast around our extraordinary mahogany dining table\, all dressed for the occasion. This table is a true place of convivium\, where tales are topped\, ideas are birthed\, and friendships created. We will toast\, dine\, share stories\, poetry\, the music of the pipes\, announce the winners of the Haggis Games. We will have both carnivore and vegetarian menu choices\, just let us know which would prefer when you buy your tickets. \nThe Menu\n\nSalad (V)\ncharred fennel\, cranberries\, candied pecans\, cucumbers \nover arugula with a house made lemon vinaigrette \nFirst Course (V)\nroasted tartan veggies\nparsnips\, carrots\, rutabaga\, and potatoes with smoked salt\, local honey and thyme \nand a tasting for the brave:\nthe mighty haggis: great chieftain o’ the puddin’ race\n\nVegivore Entrée (V)\nour famous vegetarian mushroom wellington\nserved with an apple cider reduction and braised leeks \nCarnivore Entrée\nwhiskey marmalade braised lamb shanks with a smokey bacon au jus\nserved over a leek and barley risotto  \nDessert (+V)\nraspberry whiskey cranachan with scottish shortbread\nboth dairy and vegan versions \ncoffee | spillian cat’s love tea | spillian sweet winter orange tea | lemonade | cucumber water \nThe Schedule \n\n5 PM: Cocktail hour featuring the Spillian Highland\, with local Catskills whiskey\, a whisper of the heather on the hills\, and a curl of smoke. SUMMARY:Breathing Fire: A Wild Power Workshop for Women
DESCRIPTION:Breathing Fire: A Wild Power Workshop for Women\nFebruary 3-5\, 2023\nFacilitated by Leigh Melander\, Ph.D.\, Spillian Co-Founder\nAre you burning to change your life and the world? \nReserve Now! \n\nMythic Catskills Adventures\nSpillian’s Mythic Catskills Adventures are an intersection with the essence of the Catskills: the forests\, the mountains\, the people\, the deep stories that make this place so compelling. \nEach gathering celebrates a facet of this gem-like place: its food\, its fish and streams\, its ringing summer\, its snow-spangled winters\, its flowing creative life force. \nCome for a weekend of grand adventure. Feast. Explore. Hear the great stories and share your own.  Revel in the mythic possibility of the Catskills and find where it sings in your life – and then bring that song back home with you. \n\nAbout Leigh Melander\, Ph.D.\nLeigh has an eclectic background in the arts as well as consulting in strategic planning\, outreach and marketing\, and event planning for over 20 years. She has performed\, and taught and facilitated explorations of imagination and creativity internationally\, working with individuals and groups to help them find their way to bringing their wild ideas to life. Her first book in the Frivolous Revolution series\, Psyche’s Choice\, has been released as on Amazon\, with additional books coming in 2023. \nHer undergraduate degree is in performance\, literature\, and history from Penn State\, and she studied writing by invitation with Nobel Poet Laureate Derek Walcott at Boston University. It was a revelry attended by more than 500 guests. Since then our magical meadow has hosted weddings\, workshops\, and gatherings. We’ve added a pretty spiff rustic pavilion for the bar\, made from trees on the property\, the bonfire pit\, and lighting to shape the woods around us. \n\nThe Music\nLara Hope & The Arktones\n \nFresh off from touring with the Brian Setzer Orchestra! Winner of the 2017 Ameripolitan Music Award for Best Female Rockabilly Artist\, and named the “Best Up-And-Coming Band” by Hudson Valley Magazine\, Lara Hope and the Ark-Tones are New York’s premier “Roots Rock n’ Roll & Rockabilly Twang” outfit. They released their 2nd full length album\, “Love You to Life”\, in August 2017\, and have been hitting the road hard\, spreading the gospel of American music wherever they go. Describing their sound\, Hope explained to Rockabilly Online “I would say we are a new take on an old sound. It’s been described as ‘pan-americana’ which means we use many areas of early rock and roots music as a creative launchpad. Where it goes from there is anyone’s guess\, because while we appreciate old music\, we don’t want to write songs that have already been written.” \nThey’ve built a great network of venues in the US by touring heavily\, and like many American bands\, they have gained supportive fans and excellent press overseas as well. They recently completed their first European tour\, successfully spending the month of April 2018 in Belgium and Holland. Hope was featured on the cover of UK Rock n’ Roll magazine in March 2015\, and New York’s Ulster Magazine in March 2016. The band has had the privilidge of playing with many of their musical heroes including Joan Jett\, Tiger Army\, Gary US Bonds\, Dale Watson\, Big Sandy\, Wayne Hancock\, and America\, among others\, and has performed at at a variety of national festivals including Viva Las Vegas\, Ink n Iron\, and The Nashville Boogie. They spent the summer of 2018 on tour in support of The Reverend Horton Heat and The Blasters\, and Nov/Dec on the road Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas Rocks Tour. \nMore on Lara Hope & The Arktones… \n  \nThe Dylan Doyle Band\n \n\nBack for his fourth year headlining SpillianFest! Southern born\, Northern raised \, Dylan Doyle has been steeped in everything from Bob Dylan\, Wes Montgomery\, and Bill Withers to John Prine\, Jimi Hendrix\, and The Band.  From this comes a unique musical interpretation that lies somewhere within the delta of Roots\, Rock\, and Jazz\, giving him a style that defies classification. \nTouring nationally since age 15\, Dylan became a seasoned professional at a very young age.  He has played with such notable musicians Rob Stoner (Bob Dylan\, Don Mclean)\, John Platania (Van Morrison\, Natalie Merchant)\, Ben Cauley (Otis Redding) and Bill Payne (Little Feat).  Stoner called Dylan one of the most prodigious players he has known with abundant natural talent.  John Platania has referred to Dylan as “The Future.”  Ben Cauley\, after playing with Dylan in Memphis said\, “Dylan Doyle sounds like a young Jimi Hendrix.”  In the words of Bill Payne upon sharing the stage\, “Music is a conversation.  Dylan spoke beautifully and was listening to the musicians around him.  His play was imaginative and original.” Attesting to Dylan’s versatility\, Dylan has played the King Biscuit Blues Festival three consecutive years as well headlining the Grateful Garcia Gathering\, the largest Grateful Dead festival in the Midwest. Dylan consistently packs houses around Europe and the United States. \n\nMore on the Dylan Doyle Band…\n

In John’s hands\, the bagpipes will get your feet dancing as well as your tears flowing. An ancient Scottish proverb speaks to the raw power of the ancient instrument – “12 Highlanders and a bagpipe make a rebellion”. She is a presenter and coach in innovation\, and her first book\, Just This Side of Crazy: Dreaming Your Wild Idea to Life is due out in 2019. \nShe has published in a number of juried academic publications\, including The Routledge International Handbook of Jungian Film Studies\, and Spring Journal and Books; and hosted Myth America\, a two year weekly public radio program on how myth and metaphor shape contemporary culture. She was featured on the History Channel as a mythologist and served for five years as the Vice President of the Joseph Campbell Foundation. She has done extensive research on the innovative work and community building of the Fleischmann family and their connections as she has been preparing a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the property. \n\nAbout Spillian and the Fleischmann Family\nSpillian is a center dedicated to imagination and possibility on the site of the original Fleischmann family summer estate in the mountains\, and is proud to host the Fleischmanns Founders’ Day opening celebrations. In addition to Friday’s events\, we’re offering an weekend of programming to compliment the festivities this weekend\, including lodging for the weekend and a special Saturday night feast: The Leavening | A Mythic Catskills Weekend. \nSpillian’s mansion is the sole remaining house built by the Fleischmanns during their thirty-plus years here. We love this description of this amazing property from 1895: \n“Some years ago several members of the Fleischmann family\, in search of rural quiet and picturesque scenery\, visited this retired neighborhood\, and\, charmed with its pure air\, high altitudes\, and care-banishing influences\, resolved that their first visit should by no means be their last. Accordingly\, about 1882\, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Fleischmann and Mr. and Mrs. Leopold Bleier came to the locality\, and purchased a part of the old farm then owned by John M. Blish\, building pleasant summer cottages\, well adapted to the requirements of health and pleasure seekers. They were soon joined by others\, among them Charles Fleischmann\, Carl Edelheim\, Mrs. Max Fleischmann\, Anton Seidl\, Louis Josephthal\, and Carl Hermann. Bernard Ullman and Henry Mierlander added to the architectural beauties of the place by establishing spacious and picturesque homes on the mountain side\, Mr. Charles Fleischmann building three more large and tasteful dwellings. \nThe grounds surrounding these attractive residences are exquisitely laid out\, teeming with flowers and shrubbery\, and broken here and there with convenient walks and well-graded carriage drives. A large deer park\, in which ramble at will some choice specimens of their kind\, adds greatly to the interest of the landscape. Swimming Pond\, supplied with pure mountain spring water\, is a convenience that has not been forgotten; neither have commodious stables and carriage houses. Another most interesting and luxurious feature of this realm of pleasance is a fine riding-school in a magnificently equipped hall\, with a commodious gallery\, in which the friends of the riders can sit and watch their graceful evolutions. There are costly paintings on the walls\, which are elsewhere tastefully draped with rich bunting; and four large chandeliers provide brilliant illumination for evening pleasures. A portable floor has also been provided for dancing\, and an orchestra of skilled musicians from New York is kept in good practice throughout the season. The railroad station\, a tasteful structure\, erected by the liberality of the Fleischmanns\, invites the attention of the passing traveller. The surrounding grounds attest the work of an artist in landscape gardening. \nThis charming spot\, whose natural beauties have been so enhanced by a boundless liberality\, directed by cultivated taste\, is yet but in embryo. The plans for the future are well calculated to dwarf the achievements of the past; and in the choice and secluded settlement of “Fleischmanns\,” nestling in the shadow of the romantic Catskills\, redolent of health\, innocent gaiety\, and cultured ease\, we may view a place where sordid cares are excluded and the rude turmoil of life’s battle stilled\, its faint echoes only touching the chord of remembrance\, as the reverberations of the swift express\, with its varied freight of human interests\, hopes\, and passions\, break softly on the air and lose themselves in the rural solitudes.” \nBiographical Review – 1895\nThe Leading Citizens of Delaware County\, NY\nThis volume contains Biographical Sketches of The Leading Citizens of Delaware County New York\nBiography is the home aspect of history\nBoston\nBiographical Review Publishing Company 1895

SUMMARY:Creating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive
DESCRIPTION:Creating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive\nJune 2 to 7\, 2019\nFacilitated by Robert Smythe\, MFA\nLooking to bring a play that’s been burbling in your unconscious to life or shape one that you’ve been stuck with? Join Guggenheim Fellow and acclaimed teacher and playwright Robert Smythe for a workshop that will unlock the secrets of making plays in high summer in the Catskills. This intimate intensive is perfect both for new and emerging writers as well as seasoned pro’s. \nCreating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive will focus you on knowing what exactly you are trying to say to an audience\, instead of how you are saying it. We’ll take the general themes and concepts that first led you to conceive of writing a play — or acting in one — and make them specific. \n  \n[btnsx id=”11047″] \n\nDetails\nWe’ll work on getting the story out of your head and into a form that can be understood and interpreted by the other artists you will eventually direct\, perform beside or inspire. By the time you finish the first five-minute exercise\, you’ll be surprised at what you have inside you. You’ll learn how to use tension and rhythm\, and how to reveal states of mind through personal moments. You’ll write scenes and monologues. And love it. \nYou’ll discover that\, in addition or even instead of all the other things you thought you were\, you are a writer of plays. Not because someone told you that you are\, but because you know you are. \nIn each session\, you’ll spend time writing and then you’ll share what you’ve written with the rest of us. After you get feedback\, you’ll have free time to continue writing as you savor Spillian’s magical creative space\, and then we will join together again to further work what’s emerged. \nAs we move through the course\, we’ll explore how to write for the stage: not just how to write words for actors to speak\, but how to make things happen: how to create excitement and surprises\, and interest and emotion\, so that when people act out your play\, or see it in a performance\, they’ll understand exactly what you mean. \n_________________________________________ \nCreating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive\n Sunday evening\, June 2\, at 6:30 PM to Friday June 7\, at 11 AM\n• Attendees are welcome to arrive any time Sunday afternoon after 3 PM to check in.\n• Please bring comfortable clothes that you can move in.\n• An intimate workshop with only eight participants\, so you are sure lots of personal attention on your work. \nWorkshop and Lodging Fee: $685 until May 30\, 2019. $785 after that date.\nIncludes all chef-crafted meals\, sessions\, materials\, and lodging in one of Spillian’s delightful rooms!  You can learn more about them here and make your choice on the registration page.\n[btnsx id=”11047″] \n_________________________________________\nAbout Robert Smythe\, MFA\nRobert is an acclaimed theater artist and the founder of Mum Puppettheatre\, the only regional theater in the United States dedicated to puppetry\, serving as its Artistic Director for 23 years. During that time he wrote\, directed and performed over 20 original productions using puppets\, masks and human actors\, winning numerous awards and honors\, including four Barrymore Awards for himself and 13 for the company. He also led Mum on international tours on four continents. \nRobert is the recipient of Guggenheim\, Pew\, NEA and six Pennsylvania Council on the Arts fellowships\, and six Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theater in areas ranging from education to choreography. According to Philadelphia City Paper\, Smythe’s work with Mum “sparked the theater renaissance that continues to this day.” He was the first artist to receive a commission from the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts in 2008\, and the resulting collaboration between him and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, Stravinsky’s “l’Histoire du Soldat\,” won the 2011 Barrymore Award for Outstanding Collaboration. \nHe is the founder of the Playwriting Program for the International Puppetry Conference at the Tony-winning O’Neill Theater Center. SUMMARY:Murder on the Mountain | A Mythic Catskills Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Murder on the Mountain | A Mythic Catskills Weekend\nMarch 1-3\, 2019\nAn original murderous adventure steeped in the gin-spiked glamor of the 20’s. \nA mystery created at Spillian with characters drawn from literature and history\, inspired by the lore of 20’s icons (and gangsters!) wanders to the Catskills mountains for entertainment and\, well\, a bit of nefarious activity. \nWe’re thrilled to offer you a chance to dive into this mystery as part of our partnership with friend and  filmmaker Alex Harvey as he shapes an upcoming full length independent feature film set at Spillian with this mystery at its heart. Come and be a part of a murder…and the birth of a film! \nWhen you arrive… \nYou all have received your invitations for Jack Goodwin and Violet DeWitt’s famous – or infamous – birthday house party in their Catskills mansion. It’s going to be a party that was far more than (most of you) planned for… A mystery who-dunnit in high style. \nAs F. Scott himself said\, “Never miss a party…good for the nerves–like celery.” \nThis year\, you have been invited for the weekend up to their Catskills cottage (really a rustically luxurious estate) for an informal dinner and dancing\, with good gin flowing out of the reach and eyes of the New York police. Or the Feds. \nTo entertain their guests\, the Goodwins have secured the services of a famous Russian Gypsy medium\, Madame Plavatski\, for the evening on Saturday to tell fortunes to those guests who wish to see into their future and remember their past. \nYou may know some of the guests\, you won’t know all of them. And you may not trust any of them. You may well have secrets you want to keep to yourself and there’s a darn good chance that you’re not alone. \nBut come\, enjoy some hot jazz\, get just a bit splifficated\, and remember\, if anything goes wrong\, keep your friends close and your enemies closer… \nJoin us for the full weekend or for Saturday’s dinner and mystery! \n[btnsx id=”10580″] \n\nMythic Catskills Weekends\nSpillian’s Mythic Catskills Weekends are an intersection with the essence of the Catskills: the forests\, the mountains\, the people\, the deep stories that make this place so compelling. \nEach weekend celebrates a facet of this gem-like place: its food\, its fish and streams\, its ringing summer\, its snow-spangled winters\, its flowing creative life force. \nCome for a weekend of grand adventure.
