SUMMARY:Twelfth Night: A Feast of Fools | January 4
DESCRIPTION:Twelfth Night: A Feast of Fools\nThe Lord of Misrule\, Shakespeare\, and Merriment to End the Holiday Season\nSaturday\, January 4\, 2025\nJoin us for a last blast of celebration in honor of the end of the twelve days of Christmas! \nLong before New Year’s Eve became a thing\, Twelfth Night once echoed with a splendid upside-down revelry that challenged any strait-laced ideas of power\, identity\, and what constitutes good behavior. We will join together and co-create an evening worth of such illustrious (or\, more accurately\, irreverent) lineage. We will laugh January into submission in a Renaissance-inspired romp. And yes\, you can most absolutely come dressed as a fool! \n\nJoin us for the day/evening for Afternoon Revels. A Reveling Feast & Pig Roast & Festivities or…\nStay the night: The Full Revel – Afternoon Revels\, Cocktails\, Feast & Festivities and an Overnight Stay\n\nAdvance Reservations Required. \nReserve Now!\n\n\nThe Schedule\n1 to 4 PM: Afternoon Revels. We will play together as we prepare for the evening. There will be frolicking\, capering\, and gamboling… \n\nFoolish Revels: Learn about the rich and revolutionary history of Twelfth Night celebrations so we can revel deeply together.\nThe Spillian Reveler’s Shakespeare Company: All the world’s a stage\, and now’s your chance to become a player in our stage reading of a brilliantly fast and furious short version of Shakespeare’s iconic comedy\, Twelfth Night! We will gather in the afternoon to bring some semblance of order to chaos and prepare to trod the boards and chew all available scenery in the evening. The perfect way to do theater! No memorizing of lines and anything goes…\nThe Bar will of course be open to invite your inner jester to come and play. And there will be Spillian snacks\, so the jester doesn’t get completely out of line. Yet.\n\n5 PM: Cocktails and the Crowning of the Lord of Misrule\nIn addition to our regular bar offerings\, we’ll be evoking Renaissance renaissance flavors of the season:  hippocras\, a spiced wine flavored like cinnamon and ginger; a house-infused version of mulberry gin; and  aqua vitae – the water of life – brandy. SUMMARY:Winter Horrors: with Werewolves Within Director Josh Ruben & Friends | February 24
DESCRIPTION:Winter Horrors:\nWith Werewolves Within Director Josh Ruben and Friends\nSaturday\, February 24\, 2024\nSOLD OUT! \nEmbrace the true horrors of winter on a weekend dedicated to scaring you silly. We’ll start the afternoon with a virtual escape room game\, savor werewolf-inspired feasting and drink\, and top the evening off with a genius of scares and laughter mash-ups. The acclaimed horror-comedy movie Werewolves Within was filmed on location at Spillian\, and director\, writer\, comedian\, and all-around camp horror genius Josh Ruben will be joining us along with friends to introduce his work on screen and his new illustrated novel\, Darla. See the movie that stars (at least in our minds) Spillian and learn where the bodies are hidden… \nRight before the world shut down in a crazy global pandemic\, Spillian was visited for three months by the creative team who made Werewolves Within. Spillian both served as the primary location for the Beaverfield Inn and the production headquarters for the three-month shoot. \nJosh and the irrepressible Jean-Michel of the Hudson valley’s Mecca for comic books\, Megabrain Comics will savor the connections between fear and laughter\,  introduce a showing of Werewolves Within from within the house where the horrors happened (along with a tour of spots that might look a bit familiar to you)\, a bunch of fascinating conversation on movie making and what Josh is up to creatively these days\, and a food station feast that honors horror films. Chef Christian is rubbing his hands together in anticipation… \n  \n\nAbout Josh Ruben\nJosh Ruben is a native of Woodstock\, NY best known for his feature films SCARE ME\, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival\, and WEREWOLVES WITHIN\, which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. In 2021\, WEREWOLVES won a Midseason Hollywood Critics Association Award for “Best Indie.” Both films were filmed in the Hudson Valley. \nWEREWOLVES WITHIN landed in over 30 “Best of” features\, including many “Top Films of the Year” and “Top Horror Movies of the Year” lists in 2021\, alongside major studio horror releases such as A QUIET PLACE 2 and the Palm d’Or winning TITANE. Most notably\, Entertainment Weekly highlighted the “fabulous\, hilarious performances of its deep-bench cast\,” and Forbes gave the film its #1 pick for Best Horror\, adding “it’s hands down one of the most fun films of the year.” Recently\, Vulture listed WEREWOLVES WITHIN as the #1 Best Rated Video Game Movie out of a list of 50 films. \nIn addition to producing\, directing\, and writing\, Josh is also a performer best known for his performances in Travis Stevens’ horror film\, A WOUNDED FAWN which received rave reviews after its 2023 TriBeCa Film Festival premiere\, and the improvised comedy series MAKE SOME NOISE on Dropout TV. \n\nThe Schedule \n\n5:00 PM Cocktails (themed of course…) and a werewolf-worthy foraged feast of small bites to fill your beast belly.\n7:00 PM Josh and Jean and pals will kick the evening off\, and talk movie production and introduce Josh’s brilliant horror/comedy comic\, Darla\, exploring the disturbing underbelly of Americana through politics\, health\, psychosis and murder. (Yum!)\n7:30 PM Popcorn and drink in hands\, we’ll watch Werewolves Within together. See if you can guess where each scene was shot!\n8:45 PM Answer any question of Josh and Jean and be assured of a brilliant and most often sidesplittingly funny answer…\n\nWant to show up in costume? We’ll have a fitting reward for those who bring the essence of their own interior monster. \n\nPricing\nWinter Horrors $35/person\nJoin us for the evening’s play. Includes all activities and food. SUMMARY:The Leavening: A Mythic Catskills Weekend
DESCRIPTION:The Leavening: A Mythic Catskills Weekend\nJune 7-9\, 2019\n\nAn extraordinary history. An extraordinary vision of the future. And yeast. All in one rollicking\, evocative\, flavorful weekend. \nLeavening: a substance used in dough to make it rise. And\, even more to Spillian’s point\, an element that permeates and transforms something for the better. \n\n\nJoin us as we evoke the exquisite era of Spillian’s founders\, the  Fleischmann family\, and their wide-flung community of artists\, leaders\, makers\, and imaginers in a celebration of community\, culture\, food\, and the 150th birthday of Fleichmann’s Yeast®. \nWe are thrilled to be a part of the weekend’s Fleischmanns Founder’s Day Celebrations\, sponsored by AB Mauri\, owners of Fleichmann’s Yeast®\, and Fleischmanns First\, an extraordinary local community organization. \nTake your place  in the creative energy that has been emerging from the Catskills for over a century as we throw a birthday bash for a company that changed how America ate\, and a family who changed how we imagine ourselves. Let us be leaveners together\, and imagine how we will help the world rise. \nWith music\, conversation\, dreaming\, the inspiration of history and community\, and food\, glorious food. A feast of flavors inspired by the Fleischmanns Vienna Bakery in New York City in the era that they spent summers here. And baking. With yeast. Of course. \nThe Leavening. It’s mythic. Local.
