It was a revelry attended by more than 500 guests. Since then our magical meadow has hosted weddings\, workshops\, and gatherings. We’ve added a pretty spiff rustic pavilion for the bar\, made from trees on the property\, the bonfire pit\, and lighting to shape the woods around us. \n\nThe Music\nLara Hope & The Arktones\n \nFresh off from touring with the Brian Setzer Orchestra! Winner of the 2017 Ameripolitan Music Award for Best Female Rockabilly Artist\, and named the “Best Up-And-Coming Band” by Hudson Valley Magazine\, Lara Hope and the Ark-Tones are New York’s premier “Roots Rock n’ Roll & Rockabilly Twang” outfit. They released their 2nd full length album\, “Love You to Life”\, in August 2017\, and have been hitting the road hard\, spreading the gospel of American music wherever they go. Describing their sound\, Hope explained to Rockabilly Online “I would say we are a new take on an old sound. It’s been described as ‘pan-americana’ which means we use many areas of early rock and roots music as a creative launchpad. Where it goes from there is anyone’s guess\, because while we appreciate old music\, we don’t want to write songs that have already been written.” \nThey’ve built a great network of venues in the US by touring heavily\, and like many American bands\, they have gained supportive fans and excellent press overseas as well. They recently completed their first European tour\, successfully spending the month of April 2018 in Belgium and Holland. Hope was featured on the cover of UK Rock n’ Roll magazine in March 2015\, and New York’s Ulster Magazine in March 2016. The band has had the privilidge of playing with many of their musical heroes including Joan Jett\, Tiger Army\, Gary US Bonds\, Dale Watson\, Big Sandy\, Wayne Hancock\, and America\, among others\, and has performed at at a variety of national festivals including Viva Las Vegas\, Ink n Iron\, and The Nashville Boogie. They spent the summer of 2018 on tour in support of The Reverend Horton Heat and The Blasters\, and Nov/Dec on the road Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas Rocks Tour. \nMore on Lara Hope & The Arktones… \n  \nThe Dylan Doyle Band\n \n\nBack for his fourth year headlining SpillianFest! Southern born\, Northern raised \, Dylan Doyle has been steeped in everything from Bob Dylan\, Wes Montgomery\, and Bill Withers to John Prine\, Jimi Hendrix\, and The Band.  From this comes a unique musical interpretation that lies somewhere within the delta of Roots\, Rock\, and Jazz\, giving him a style that defies classification. \nTouring nationally since age 15\, Dylan became a seasoned professional at a very young age.  He has played with such notable musicians Rob Stoner (Bob Dylan\, Don Mclean)\, John Platania (Van Morrison\, Natalie Merchant)\, Ben Cauley (Otis Redding) and Bill Payne (Little Feat).  Stoner called Dylan one of the most prodigious players he has known with abundant natural talent.  John Platania has referred to Dylan as “The Future.”  Ben Cauley\, after playing with Dylan in Memphis said\, “Dylan Doyle sounds like a young Jimi Hendrix.”  In the words of Bill Payne upon sharing the stage\, “Music is a conversation.  Dylan spoke beautifully and was listening to the musicians around him.  His play was imaginative and original.” Attesting to Dylan’s versatility\, Dylan has played the King Biscuit Blues Festival three consecutive years as well headlining the Grateful Garcia Gathering\, the largest Grateful Dead festival in the Midwest. Dylan consistently packs houses around Europe and the United States. \n\nMore on the Dylan Doyle Band…\n

She has done extensive research on the innovative work and community building of the Fleischmann family and their connections as she has been preparing a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the property. \n\nAbout Spillian and the Fleischmann Family\nSpillian is a center dedicated to imagination and possibility on the site of the original Fleischmann family summer estate in the mountains\, and is proud to host the Fleischmanns Founders’ Day opening celebrations. In addition to Friday’s events\, we’re offering an weekend of programming to compliment the festivities this weekend\, including lodging for the weekend and a special Saturday night feast: The Leavening | A Mythic Catskills Weekend. \nSpillian’s mansion is the sole remaining house built by the Fleischmanns during their thirty-plus years here. We love this description of this amazing property from 1895: \n“Some years ago several members of the Fleischmann family\, in search of rural quiet and picturesque scenery\, visited this retired neighborhood\, and\, charmed with its pure air\, high altitudes\, and care-banishing influences\, resolved that their first visit should by no means be their last. Accordingly\, about 1882\, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Fleischmann and Mr. and Mrs. Leopold Bleier came to the locality\, and purchased a part of the old farm then owned by John M. Blish\, building pleasant summer cottages\, well adapted to the requirements of health and pleasure seekers. They were soon joined by others\, among them Charles Fleischmann\, Carl Edelheim\, Mrs. Max Fleischmann\, Anton Seidl\, Louis Josephthal\, and Carl Hermann. Bernard Ullman and Henry Mierlander added to the architectural beauties of the place by establishing spacious and picturesque homes on the mountain side\, Mr. Charles Fleischmann building three more large and tasteful dwellings. \nThe grounds surrounding these attractive residences are exquisitely laid out\, teeming with flowers and shrubbery\, and broken here and there with convenient walks and well-graded carriage drives. A large deer park\, in which ramble at will some choice specimens of their kind\, adds greatly to the interest of the landscape. Swimming Pond\, supplied with pure mountain spring water\, is a convenience that has not been forgotten; neither have commodious stables and carriage houses. Another most interesting and luxurious feature of this realm of pleasance is a fine riding-school in a magnificently equipped hall\, with a commodious gallery\, in which the friends of the riders can sit and watch their graceful evolutions. There are costly paintings on the walls\, which are elsewhere tastefully draped with rich bunting; and four large chandeliers provide brilliant illumination for evening pleasures. A portable floor has also been provided for dancing\, and an orchestra of skilled musicians from New York is kept in good practice throughout the season. The railroad station\, a tasteful structure\, erected by the liberality of the Fleischmanns\, invites the attention of the passing traveller. The surrounding grounds attest the work of an artist in landscape gardening. \nThis charming spot\, whose natural beauties have been so enhanced by a boundless liberality\, directed by cultivated taste\, is yet but in embryo. The plans for the future are well calculated to dwarf the achievements of the past; and in the choice and secluded settlement of “Fleischmanns\,” nestling in the shadow of the romantic Catskills\, redolent of health\, innocent gaiety\, and cultured ease\, we may view a place where sordid cares are excluded and the rude turmoil of life’s battle stilled\, its faint echoes only touching the chord of remembrance\, as the reverberations of the swift express\, with its varied freight of human interests\, hopes\, and passions\, break softly on the air and lose themselves in the rural solitudes.” \nBiographical Review – 1895\nThe Leading Citizens of Delaware County\, NY\nThis volume contains Biographical Sketches of The Leading Citizens of Delaware County New York\nBiography is the home aspect of history\nBoston\nBiographical Review Publishing Company 1895

By the time you finish the first five-minute exercise\, you’ll be surprised at what you have inside you. You’ll learn how to use tension and rhythm\, and how to reveal states of mind through personal moments. You’ll write scenes and monologues. And love it. \nYou’ll discover that\, in addition or even instead of all the other things you thought you were\, you are a writer of plays. Not because someone told you that you are\, but because you know you are. \nIn each session\, you’ll spend time writing and then you’ll share what you’ve written with the rest of us. After you get feedback\, you’ll have free time to continue writing as you savor Spillian’s magical creative space\, and then we will join together again to further work what’s emerged. \nAs we move through the course\, we’ll explore how to write for the stage: not just how to write words for actors to speak\, but how to make things happen: how to create excitement and surprises\, and interest and emotion\, so that when people act out your play\, or see it in a performance\, they’ll understand exactly what you mean. \n_________________________________________ \nCreating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive\n Sunday evening\, June 2\, at 6:30 PM to Friday June 7\, at 11 AM\n• Attendees are welcome to arrive any time Sunday afternoon after 3 PM to check in.\n• Please bring comfortable clothes that you can move in.\n• An intimate workshop with only eight participants\, so you are sure lots of personal attention on your work. \nWorkshop and Lodging Fee: $685 until May 30\, 2019. $785 after that date.\nIncludes all chef-crafted meals\, sessions\, materials\, and lodging in one of Spillian’s delightful rooms!  You can learn more about them here and make your choice on the registration page.\n[btnsx id=”11047″] \n_________________________________________\nAbout Robert Smythe\, MFA\nRobert is an acclaimed theater artist and the founder of Mum Puppettheatre\, the only regional theater in the United States dedicated to puppetry\, serving as its Artistic Director for 23 years. SUMMARY:Murder on the Mountain | A Mythic Catskills Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Murder on the Mountain | A Mythic Catskills Weekend\nMarch 1-3\, 2019\nAn original murderous adventure steeped in the gin-spiked glamor of the 20’s. \nA mystery created at Spillian with characters drawn from literature and history\, inspired by the lore of 20’s icons (and gangsters!) wanders to the Catskills mountains for entertainment and\, well\, a bit of nefarious activity. \nWe’re thrilled to offer you a chance to dive into this mystery as part of our partnership with friend and  filmmaker Alex Harvey as he shapes an upcoming full length independent feature film set at Spillian with this mystery at its heart. Come and be a part of a murder…and the birth of a film! \nWhen you arrive… \nYou all have received your invitations for Jack Goodwin and Violet DeWitt’s famous – or infamous – birthday house party in their Catskills mansion. It’s going to be a party that was far more than (most of you) planned for… A mystery who-dunnit in high style. \nAs F. Scott himself said\, “Never miss a party…good for the nerves–like celery.” \nThis year\, you have been invited for the weekend up to their Catskills cottage (really a rustically luxurious estate) for an informal dinner and dancing\, with good gin flowing out of the reach and eyes of the New York police. Or the Feds. \nTo entertain their guests\, the Goodwins have secured the services of a famous Russian Gypsy medium\, Madame Plavatski\, for the evening on Saturday to tell fortunes to those guests who wish to see into their future and remember their past. \nYou may know some of the guests\, you won’t know all of them. And you may not trust any of them. You may well have secrets you want to keep to yourself and there’s a darn good chance that you’re not alone. \nBut come\, enjoy some hot jazz\, get just a bit splifficated\, and remember\, if anything goes wrong\, keep your friends close and your enemies closer… \nJoin us for the full weekend or for Saturday’s dinner and mystery! \n[btnsx id=”10580″] \n\nMythic Catskills Weekends\nSpillian’s Mythic Catskills Weekends are an intersection with the essence of the Catskills: the forests\, the mountains\, the people\, the deep stories that make this place so compelling. \nEach weekend celebrates a facet of this gem-like place: its food\, its fish and streams\, its ringing summer\, its snow-spangled winters\, its flowing creative life force. \nCome for a weekend of grand adventure. SUMMARY:Your Hero's Journey® Redux: A Mythological ToolBox® 2018 PlayShop
DESCRIPTION:Your Hero’s Journey® Redux: A Mythological ToolBox® 2018 PlayShop\nSunday Evening\, July 22 to Friday afternoon\, July 27\nFacilitated by Robert Walter\, President of the Joseph Campbell Foundation\n  \nRobert Walter\, President\, Joseph Campbell Foundation \nDo you dare to re-imagine yourself? Are you hungering for a quest? Want to get rocked right out of your socks and change your life? \nJoin JCF President Bob Walter for Your Hero’s Journey® Redux: A Mythological ToolBox® PlayShop this July. \nFive days of inspired\, inspiring\, creative\, chaotic\, joyful\, and challenging play at the extraordinary historic Catskills creative retreat center\, Spillian: A Place to Revel. \nTogether we will recall our dreams\, rekindle visions\, and discover the myths we are living by through drawing\, dance\, story-making\, song\, masks\, medicine bags\, silliness and deep imagining of our own hero’s journeys. \nThe Mythological ToolBox® uses the deep wisdom of myth to poke a proverbial finger in the mix that is the way you look at yourself\, your goals and the life you want to dream into being. Join us in this magical\, mythical summertime ritual of rebirth. It can change everything. \nA Little Background \nThe birth of the Mythological ToolBox® emerges from an annual gathering on Joseph Campbell’s birthday. As he celebrated\, he would explore Carl Jung’s wondering\, “What myth am I living by?”— and when he realized that he didn’t know\, writing “I took it upon myself to get to know ‘my’ myth\, and I regarded this as the task of tasks.” He concluded\, “That’s what a birthday is for.”  Since 1988\, after his death\, friends and newcomers to Campbell’s work have been gathering to celebrate life and explore ‘their’ myths. Eventually these festivities were dubbed “A Mythological ToolBox” to acknowledge that familiarity with Campbell is not needed to retool the myths that shape one’s life — though a sense of humor certainly helps. \nIn what is emerging as a rich tradition at Spillian\, we are delighted to offer the fifth Mythological ToolBox® PlayShop at Spillian in 2018. This is an intimate\, luxurious adventure into Campbell’s ideas and your own mythologies\, with a small group and fine food in an exquisite place. \nThe workshop is facilitated by our good friend and colleague Robert Walter\, Joseph Campbell’s editor for a decade\, president of the Joseph Campbell Foundation\, and a poet/playwright with several decades of experience as group leader\, teacher\, publisher\, and theatrical producer/director/designer. \nJoseph Campbell\, 1904-1987 \nOur mix of individual\, small-group\, and collective activities will provide opportunities for both reflection and expression. Who were you? What mise-en-scènes inspire your biographical saga? What treasures have you banished to the basement or secreted in the attic? Who are you? What’s displayed in your home or dangling from your rearview mirror? Who do you aspire to be? What face do you envision in the mirror? What remains on your bucket list? If you dare to revision yourself\, then join our summertime rituals of rebirth. Please bring a meaningful but expendable totem and an unsung story or evocative song. \nRecommended reading: Myths to Live By\, The Hero with a Thousand Faces\, and The Power of Myth. \nThe Hero’s Journey® and Mythological ToolBox® are Registered Trademarks of the Joseph Campbell Foundation. \n_________________________________________ \nYour Hero’s Journey® Redux: Mythological ToolBox® 2018 Playshop Workshop Schedule\nThis workshop is five days long\,beginning on Sunday evening\, July 22\, at 7 PM and concluding Friday\, July 27\, after lunch.\n• Hero’s Journey® Redux attendees are welcome to arrive any time Sunday afternoon after 3 PM.\n• Please bring comfortable clothes and shoes.\n• Morning yoga or meditation class on the porch or in the meadow.\n• Commuters welcome for the workshop registration fee. It was a revelry attended by more than 500 guests. Since then our magical meadow has hosted weddings\, workshops\, and gatherings. This summer\, we’re thrilled to introduce a new rustic pavilion\, handcrafted from trees from the property. \n  \n\nThe Music\nAbout Bill Duke and the Hyzer Hillbillies\n\nA local favorite folk and bluegrass group\, led by Bill Duke and his high lonesome tenor. \nThe Hyzer Hillbillies caught their name rolling down Hyzer Hill in Delaware County\, and finesse a combination of covers and original songs including the hit single “Hickster Man” on guitar\, banjo\, harmonica\, various things to drum on\, and the occasional shovel. Hey\, it’s Delaware County! There are two rocks for every dirt…everybody needs a shovel… \n  \n  \n\nAbout Yard Sale\n \nRoots experimentalists in the tradition of the Band\, Neil Young\, Dr. Dog\, and The Avett Brothers\, Yard Sale’s fluent playing and roughhewn\, uncorrected vocal virtuosity often transcends folk\, approaching the sop \nhistication of casual chamber music\, but always in the service of sturdy\, eccentric and emotionally stirring songs. Like the best of today’s smart indie Americana artists (including some of their Team Love Records label mates)\, Yard Sales plays freely with American myth\, haunted spirits\, and weird old styles but does so in a way that is less studied\, less groomed\, and more stylistically inclusive than many of their steadfastly retro peers. Learn more!  \n  \nAbout Dylan Doyle\n \nSouthern born\, Northern raised \, Dylan Doyle has been steeped in everything from Bob Dylan\, Wes Montgomery\, and Bill Withers to John Prine\, Jimi Hendrix\, and The Band.  From this comes a unique musical interpretation that lies somewhere within the delta of Roots\, Rock\, and Jazz\, giving him a style that defies classification. Touring nationally since age 15\, Dylan became a seasoned professional at a very young age. His play was imaginative and original. Attesting to Dylan’s versatility\, Dylan has played the King Biscuit Blues Festival three consecutive years as well headlining the Grateful Garcia Gathering\, the largest Grateful Dead festival in the Midwest\, and consistently packs houses around Europe and the United States. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Creating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive
DESCRIPTION:Creating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive\nJune 3 to 8\, 2018\nFacilitated by Robert Smythe\, MFA\nLooking to bring a play that’s been burbling in your unconscious to life or shape one that you’ve been stuck with? Join Guggenheim Fellow and acclaimed teacher and playwright Robert Smythe for a workshop that will unlock the secrets of making plays in high summer in the Catskills. This intimate intensive is perfect both for new and emerging writers as well as seasoned pro’s. \nCreating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive will focus you on knowing what exactly you are trying to say to an audience\, instead of how you are saying it. We’ll take the general themes and concepts that first led you to conceive of writing a play — or acting in one — and make them specific. \n[btnsx id=”9146″] \nDetails\nWe’ll work on getting the story out of your head and into a form that can be understood and interpreted by the other artists you will eventually direct\, perform beside or inspire. \n_________________________________________ \nCreating Life: A Playwrighting Immersive\n Sunday evening\, June 3\, at 6:30 PM to Friday June 8\, at 11 AM\n• Attendees are welcome to arrive any time Sunday afternoon after 3 PM to check in.\n• Please bring comfortable clothes that you can move in.\n• An intimate workshop with only eight participants\, so you are sure lots of personal attention on your work. \nWorkshop and Lodging Fee: $685 until May 25\, 2018. $785 after that date.\nIncludes all chef-crafted meals\, sessions\, materials\, and lodging in one of Spillian’s delightful rooms!  You can learn more about them here and make your choice on the registration page.\n_________________________________________\nAbout Robert Smythe\, MFA\nRobert is an acclaimed theater artist and the founder of Mum Puppettheatre\, the only regional theater in the United States dedicated to puppetry\, serving as its Artistic Director for 23 years. During that time he wrote\, directed and performed over 20 original productions using puppets\, masks and human actors\, winning numerous awards and honors\, including four Barrymore Awards for himself and 13 for the company. He also led Mum on international tours on four continents. \nRobert is the recipient of Guggenheim\, Pew\, NEA and six Pennsylvania Council on the Arts fellowships\, and six Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theater in areas ranging from education to choreography. According to Philadelphia City Paper\, Smythe’s work with Mum “sparked the theater renaissance that continues to this day.” He was the first artist to receive a commission from the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts in 2008\, and the resulting collaboration between him and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, Stravinsky’s “l’Histoire du Soldat\,” won the 2011 Barrymore Award for Outstanding Collaboration. \nHe is the founder of the Playwriting Program for the International Puppetry Conference at the Tony-winning O’Neill Theater Center. DESCRIPTION:Seeing Nature’s Mind | Regenerating Place\nApril 27 – May 2\, 2018\n\n\n[btnsx id=”9106″]\nCelebrate May Day and the arrival of spring by embracing the land around us at Seeing Nature’s Mind | Regenerating Place.\nJoin us for an extraordinary several days exploring the power of patterns of nature in the Catskills\, learning to see nature and place as both inspiration and guide.\n\n\nTwo workshops offered together with our partners at 7group\, a renowned regenerative design and consulting firm. Featuring internationally recognized living systems specialist Joel Glanzberg and regenerative leader\, John Boecker.\nCome to both sessions (for a special price!) or join us for one\, and discover how the land around us can provide us the answers we seek\, in design\, in community\, and in life.\nThese workshops are a part of Catskills Trout Tales\, an innovative regional campaign celebrating the streams\, forests\, and wildlife of the Catskill mountains.\n\n  \nOur thanks to our sponsors from USGBC Central Pennsylvania\,  USBGC New York Upstate\, USGBC Long Island\, and the Good Work Institute.\n\n\n\nDetails\n• Join us for both workshops for a special price\, or register for one\n• Evocative\, challenging ideas\, experiences\, and conversations.\n• Lodging or primitive campaign on a superb 19thC mountain estate with 33 forested acres to explore.\n• A newly imagined Catskills cuisine: innovative\, fresh and local\n• CEU credits available through AIA and the US Green Building Council \n  \nSeeing with Nature’s Mind: Problem Evolving for a Living World\nWith Joel Glanzberg\n7 PM Friday\, April 27 at 7 PM to 11 AM Monday\, April 30\n“Most of our problems are caused by thinking differently than Nature works.”\n–Gregory Bateson \nPatterns are the language of life\, our original mother tongue. By triangulating the perspectives of traditional tracking (pattern reading)\, living systems thinking (pattern thinking) and regenerative design (pattern design)\, we can relearn to see with Nature’s mind and act as essential members of this living world with essential roles She is literally dying for us to play. \nBecause all living systems follow the same patterns\, learning to read them reveals where and how we can contribute to growing their health. We need to learn how to be open observers\, clearing the mirror of our minds to see behind the surface to the workings of the life of systems and how to find our place as active participants within them. \nThis workshop will be useful for designers\, artists\, and practitioners of all sorts\, as well as anyone interested in awareness and seeing the world in a different way. It is open to all levels of abilities. Though we will be using our bodies\, it will not be overly rigorous and appropriate for all physical abilities. Exercises exploring the patterns in our bodies\, our breath\, the landscape\, and our minds will take us from verbal and non-verbal dialog to movement\, as well as silent observation\, learning visceral ways to experience how living systems work\, and how to take our effective places within them. \n\n  \nRegenerating Place: Whole-Systems Design and Planning\n1 PM Monday April 30 to 5 PM Wednesday May 2\nWith John Boecker and Joel Glanzberg\nJoin us in learning together how to engage regenerative design and development in the places we shape\, using Spillian as a living lab. \nFor over two years\, John Boecker has been working with Spillian and its community to understand it as a place of regeneration for both people and the land itself. In this workshop\, we will dive deep into the master plan for the 33 acre estate\, learning how we can understand its unique identity as we imagine the future of its vision\, its historic buildings\, its landscape\, and its stakeholders. \nWorking in this way awakens a deep and caring sense of place that transforms how we see humans as partners in the ongoing evolution of living systems. Together we can improve the quality of life for all species as we co-create a vision for our built and natural landscapes and our communities by embracing the health of the whole\, not just the pieces. \nThe second in a series of Spillian/7Group regenerative planning workshops. For all those who are seeking a holistic way of understanding and implementing design for landscapes\, the built environment\, and communities. \n  \n\n\nPricing\nBoth Workshops Registration: $675 until April 20. $825 after that date.\nSeeing with Nature’s Mind: $395 until April 20. $485 after that date.\nRegenerating Place: $315 until April 20. $385 after that date. \nIf you’d like to bring a larger group of friends or colleagues\, please contact us for special  group pricing. \nFee includes chef-made meals\, materials\, and programming.\nEvening cash bar\, lodging\, and gratuities not included.\nNote: This fee is for the workshop. Its founding was a response to the realization that so many of the blocks to implementing Living Systems Design work were not physical\, but in people’s understanding and thinking. Joel’s work with the Tracking Project provides another approach to understanding and working with patterns and the natural world\, as well as techniques for accessing the minds required. Learn more about Joel’s work on patterns and regenerative design at patternmind.org. \nJohn Boecker\nJohn is a founding partner in 7group\, an internationally recognized multi-disciplinary consulting firm focused on green and regenerative development. I now make my home in Chichester\, NY\, on the banks of the Stony Clove Creek\, an aggressive double-haul from the historic Esopus Creek. \nLiving\, working\, and fly fishing in the “Cradle of American Fly Fishing” has sharpened my game\, taught me a bit of humility\, and given me an intimate knowledge of the region’s legendary rivers — Esopus\, Schoharie and the East and West Branches of the Delaware — and their tributaries. Exploring the rich fly fishing history and traditions of the Catskills — where it all began in America\, after all — has added another layer of enjoyment to the sport I love. \nI’ve heard it said that if you can find a way to make money doing something you love\, you’ll never have to work another day in your life. Sharing the excitement of fly fishing with others — young or old\, new or experienced — and maybe helping another individual catch the bug is my reward. That’s why I started Catskill Mountain Angler. \nLearn more here. \n  \nAbout Upstate Adventure Guides\nUpstate Adventure Guides have emerged as a preeminent licensed guide service in the Catskills and beyond. Co-founder Will Soter is the Vice President of the New York State Outdoor Guide Association\, hosts a weekly radio show on exploring the Catskills\, and is a regular contributor to various regional publications on the delights and challenges of hiking. \nUpstate Adventure Guides offers a range of options from interpretive nature walks\, to multi-day backpacking trips. We have programs for all ages\, and can custom tailor an experience for you\, or your group. \nLearn more here. \n  \nAbout Leigh Melander\, PhD\nAlong with being Spillian’s co-founder\, Leigh is a cultural mythologist\, presenter\, coach\, and creative artist. She offers workshops and organizational consulting on imagination and story nationally and at Spillian. She hosts a popular radio show (podcast coming soon!) called Myth America\, has appeared on national media as a mythology expert\, and is the Vice President of the Joseph Campbell Foundation. Her doctorate is in mythology and psychology\, and her first book\, Just That Side of Crazy\, is due out in early 2019. \nOur thanks to Esopus Creel for the gorgeous image for this event!

SUMMARY:Breathing Fire: A Wild Power Workshop for Women
DESCRIPTION:Breathing Fire: A Wild Power Workshop for Women\nMarch 9 to 11\, 2018\nFacilitated by Leigh Melander\, Ph.D.\, Spillian Co-Founder\nAre you burning to change your life and the world? Join us for Breathing Fire: A Wild Power Workshop for Women. \nIn most cultures\, women have been traditionally defined by three roles: maiden\, mother\, and crone. Each is a powerful metaphor\, each has value\, but they all live within society’s expectations.  They are often as much about how the world sees women as they are how we see ourselves. \nThere is another metaphor\, one that acknowledges women’s power\, our wildness\, and how we often stand outside the constructs of society. \nAnd that is dragon. Filled with fire\, with possibility\, with fortune\, and with danger\, dragons refuse to be bound by rules. \nHow do we see and embrace this power in ourselves\, even when we aren’t sure we can? How can we learn to ride this fire enough so it doesn’t burn ourselves or the people around us? And at the same time\, how can we understand that its very nature resists being tamed? How can we navigate the risks of unleashing this fire in a world that is often terrified by it? \nExplore your own fair fierceness through story\, movement\, and imagination. \n[btnsx id=”9048″] \n_________________________________________ \nBreathing Fire: A Wild Power Workshop for Women\nFriday evening\, March 9\, at 7 PM to Sunday March 11\, at 11 AM\n• Attendees are welcome to arrive any time Friday afternoon after 3 PM.\n• Please bring comfortable clothes that you can move in.\n• Commuters welcome for the workshop registration fee. Lodging is available onsite. \nWorkshop Fee: $275 until March 7\, 2018. $345 after that date.\nIncludes all chef-made meals\, sessions\, and materials.\nLodging in Spillian Mansion: $225-$275\nSpillian offers eight delightful rooms. You can learn more about them here and make your choice on the registration page.\n_________________________________________\nAbout Leigh Melander\, Ph.D.\nLeigh has an eclectic background in the arts as well as consulting in strategic planning\, outreach and marketing\, and event planning for over 20 years. She has performed\, and taught and facilitated explorations of imagination and creativity internationally\, working with individuals and groups to help them find their way to bringing their wild ideas to life. \nHer undergraduate degree is in performance\, literature\, and history from Penn State\, and she studied writing by invitation with Nobel Poet Laureate Derek Walcott at Boston University. She has a doctorate in cultural mythology and psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute and wrote her dissertation on frivolity as an entry into imagination. She has has appeared in various media outlets\, including the History Channel\, as a mythology expert\, and has published articles in Spring Journal\, The Routledge International Handbook of Jungian Film Studies\, The Mythology CD-ROM. She hosts a weekly radio show on an NPR affiliate and podcast: Myth America\, an exploration into how myth shapes our sense of identity and serves as the Vice President of the Joseph Campbell Foundation and the editor of their MythBlast series.

SUMMARY:Your Hero's Journey® Redux: A Mythological ToolBox® 2017 PlayShop
DESCRIPTION:  \nYour Hero’s Journey® Redux: A Mythological ToolBox® 2017 PlayShop\nSunday Evening\, July 23 to Friday afternoon\, July 28\nFacilitated by Robert Walter\, President of the Joseph Campbell Foundation\nRobert Walter\, President\, Joseph Campbell Foundation \nDo you dare to re-imagine yourself? \nIn what is emerging as a rich tradition at Spillian\, we are delighted to offer the fourth Mythological ToolBox® PlayShop at Spillian in 2017. Come and experience the Hero’s Journey® in creative\, chaotic\, joyful\, and challenging play. \nRecommended reading: Campbell\, Myths to Live By\, The Hero with a Thousand Faces\, and The Power of Myth. \nThe Hero’s Journey® and Mythological ToolBox® are Registered Trademarks of the Joseph Campbell Foundation. \n_________________________________________ \nYour Hero’s Journey® Redux: Mythological ToolBox® 2017 Playshop Workshop Schedule\nThis workshop is five days long\,beginning on Sunday evening\, July 23\, at 7 PM and concluding Friday\, July 28\, after lunch.\n• Hero’s Journey® Redux attendees are welcome to arrive any time Sunday afternoon after 3 PM.\n• Please bring comfortable clothes and shoes.\n• Morning yoga or meditation class on the porch or in the meadow.\n• We also can arrange an in-room massage for you at $100 for 60 minutes. Steeped in the authentic sounds of blues and Americana — with influences as broad as the Mississippi river\, from Robert Johnson to John Lee Hooker\, from Buddy Guy to Bob Dylan\, The Band\, Bill Withers and Jimi Hendrix\, Dylan’s unique musical interpretation lies somewhere in the intersection of delta Blues\, Rock with just a taste of Funk that is uniquely his own. \nTouring since age 15\, Dylan has performed at the Grateful Garcia Gathering\, at the King Biscuit Blues Festival for the last 4 years\, and\, this year\, is planning his first European tour for early 2017. In short\, Dylan has been preparing all his life to take the stage for his first live CD\, and plant his flag where legendary artists have tread before. \n“There truly must be something in the water in Upstate New York. Dylan joined the group Minstrel (Connor Kennedy\, Lee Falco\, Will Bryant\, and Brandon Moss) and me last September at The Falcon in Marlboro\, NY. He sat in on Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken” that evening. His playing was flawless and inventive. Live performance is not about only playing a song but being aware of the conversation and flow of those you’re playing with. He spoke beautifully and was listening to what was going on around him.” — Bill Payne\, Little Feat  \n  \nAbout The Zydeco Revelators \n \nZydeco Revelators deliver hot Louisiana-style dance music. Sweet Cajun accordion\, electric guitar and a powerhouse rhythm section\, and that cool metal rub-board vest\, touring the East Coast! Bring yer dancin’ shoes… Featuring Phil Passantino\, accordion/vocals\, Lou Selmi\, drums/vocs\, Keith Vukan\, bass/vocs\, Lawrence Ochs\, guitar/vocs\, and Arieh Bellehsen\, rub-board. \n  \n  \n  \nAbout Connie Mohar \n \nConnie is one of the gems of the Catskills. A Julliard-trained classical clarinetist and jazz sax man\, he has worked with the likes of Charles Mingus and Eddie Shaughnessy. That’s all lovely. But then there’s the accordion…Connie can play pretty much any tune you can dream up and shares it with virtuosity and a twinkle in his eye. He’ll be starting SpillianFest off right this year\, taking requests as he wanders the grounds! \n[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

SUMMARY:Camp Spillian 2017: I Was A Dancer
DESCRIPTION:Camp Spillian 2017: I Was a Dancer\nJune 11- June 16\, 2017\nBy Invitation\nOn Camp Spillian 2017: I Was A Dancer… Each year\, Spillian is making a commitment in the second week of June to offer a special gathering to support creativity and community. At this point in its development\, this is a by-invitation event. The 2017 version is for former and current professional and semi-professional dancers that we know\, and Spillian is donating the facility (the mansion and grounds) so participants will only have to chip in to create meals together. In the future\, we may well opening this annual imaginal exploration up to applications\, but we are finding our way as we experiment with community who are already connected to our vision. \nThis year\, it’s Camp Spillian 2017: I Was a Dancer. \nThis will be a special week for friends old and new who have danced in our lifetimes. Many of us are midlife at this point; some have continued on in dance or other performing arts as a career\, as performers\, educators\, choreographers\, and directors. Others of us have left dance somewhere in our rear view mirror. But\, we believe that if you have been a dancer in your lifetime\, there is a connection to the power and beauty of dance that does not die. \nWe are going to explore that connection\, the yearnings\, the desires\, the joys\, and sorrows involved within the phrase\, “I was a dancer.” We will dance into this idea in conversation\, in movement\, in indoor and outdoor space\, culminating in a Thursday evening sharing in front of an audience of what we’ve discovered about ourselves. \nMORE DETAIL \nCamp Spillian 2017: I Was a Dancer is an event for current or former pro/semi-pro (i.e.\, serious) dancers who have a connection to Spillian. (My background is as a dancer predominantly in modern dance\, and that is what we’ll focus on this week.) \nWhat I’m interested in exploring is what it means to have been a dancer – and where are the spaces and openings that creates in our lives\, whether we are actively dancing now or not. Part of this is a deep yearning that I’ve been having to find a place for dance in my life again\, part of it a realization that I still think of myself as a dancer\, even though I’ve not been dancing in any real way for far too long. I’m fascinated by this\, and think it would be a deeply rewarding process to explore how dance gets into our bodies and our psyches with lasting impact. We will talk\, imagine\, and move. We can individually or as a group build some dances on ourselves\, and I am thinking that we will offer an informal performance on Thursday night\, the last night we are together\, for the community. We may also create a video from this week\, as I am hoping that it will capture some of the essence of Spillian’s work in the world in a special way. \nAlongside this question of what it means to have been/be a dancer\, I am interested in strengthening and reviving old creative relationships as well as building new ones. \nThis will be a workshop experience\, a gathering and creating of a clan – some who danced together years ago\, and some who are landed in the Catskills – to play creatively and lightly\, but with deep focus. As such\, it will only be open to participants until the public performance on Thursday evening. \nSpillian is donating the space for this week\, and participants will pool resources for food. We will have eight rooms available for out-of-town participants to stay onsite – nine beds plus a couple of rollaways. We can comfortably house 12 to 13 people without sharing beds. \nThis is an experiment in creative community building and our donation to that experiment. Spillian is planning to offer an annual version of this week\, an opportunity for cultural creatives to gain access to the site and its energy\, and we will be focusing on a new theme/community each year. The idea was birthed last year when we hosted a gathering of my husband/partner Mark’s clan of theater designers and technicians. It was a profound experience for them – and for us – and we felt that inviting people to come out of their daily lives\, particularly midlife\, to see how they are imagining themselves through memory and ideas about the future\, is something that deeply reflects Spillian’s mission about helping people to imagine past what they think is possible. \nEventually\, we may throw the doors open more widely and invite applications for this as a residency/workshop program\, but as we take these first initial steps\, we are excited to engage with our community and deepen its connections to our work\, our play\, and one another. \nIf you have questions\, please don’t hesitate to ask. \nThanks! \nLeigh Melander\nPartner/Founding Fomenter\, Spillian

DESCRIPTION:Free Fire Cider! An Evening Workshop\nJoin us for  Free Fire Cider! An Evening Workshop\, an evening of making one of the most powerful tonics for your immune system that you can create…and be a reveling revolutionary! \nFire Cider is a blend of roots and herbs mixed with apple cider vinegar and honey used for its health-enhancing properties. This particular formula and name was coined by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar in the 1970s. You’ll leave with a mason jar full of firey goodness and the glory of fighting to honor tradition over trademark. \nFree Fire Cider!
