SUMMARY:The Hallowed Haggis: A Robert Burns Celebration | January 25
DESCRIPTION:The Hallowed Haggis:\nA Robert Burns Celebration\nSaturday\, January 25\, 2025\nWe all know January–the time of the year when holiday delights have faded into the snow and the dark cold nights of winter threaten despair… We have an antidote: The Hallowed Haggis: A Robert Burns Celebration. \nCome push against the darkness\, and join us for our fifth annual seriously silly celebration of the words and song of the Ploughman Poet\, Robert Burns. But Blanton\, a folk singer with a rock attitude\, knows how to construct songs with real melodies and storylines that don’t obscure her messages.” \nWith her unique mix of humor\, craft\, and social critique\, Blanton has amassed a small menagerie of viral hits such as  Rich People\, Shit List\, and Fishin’ With You and a dedicated fan base. In addition to fifteen years on the road with her band\, Blanton volunteers as a political organizer\, and was recently published in The Nation. You can support her on Patreon. \n  \n\nBe the first to know about upcoming events!\n\n \n \n Join the Spillian Email List\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n What kind of Spillian adventure are you dreaming? If you'd like to tell us a little bit about yourself\, or what you're most intrigued by at Spillian\, please do! SUMMARY:Twelfth Night: A Feast of Fools | January 4
DESCRIPTION:Twelfth Night: A Feast of Fools\nThe Lord of Misrule\, Shakespeare\, and Merriment to End the Holiday Season\nSaturday\, January 4\, 2025\nJoin us for a last blast of celebration in honor of the end of the twelve days of Christmas! \nLong before New Year’s Eve became a thing\, Twelfth Night once echoed with a splendid upside-down revelry that challenged any strait-laced ideas of power\, identity\, and what constitutes good behavior. We will join together and co-create an evening worth of such illustrious (or\, more accurately\, irreverent) lineage. We will laugh January into submission in a Renaissance-inspired romp. And yes\, you can most absolutely come dressed as a fool! \n\nJoin us for the day/evening for Afternoon Revels. A Reveling Feast & Pig Roast & Festivities or…\nStay the night: The Full Revel – Afternoon Revels\, Cocktails\, Feast & Festivities and an Overnight Stay\n\nAdvance Reservations Required. \nReserve Now!\n\n\nThe Schedule\n1 to 4 PM: Afternoon Revels. We will play together as we prepare for the evening. There will be frolicking\, capering\, and gamboling… \n\nFoolish Revels: Learn about the rich and revolutionary history of Twelfth Night celebrations so we can revel deeply together.\nThe Spillian Reveler’s Shakespeare Company: All the world’s a stage\, and now’s your chance to become a player in our stage reading of a brilliantly fast and furious short version of Shakespeare’s iconic comedy\, Twelfth Night! No memorizing of lines and anything goes…\nThe Bar will of course be open to invite your inner jester to come and play. And there will be Spillian snacks\, so the jester doesn’t get completely out of line. Yet.\n\n5 PM: Cocktails and the Crowning of the Lord of Misrule\nIn addition to our regular bar offerings\, we’ll be evoking Renaissance renaissance flavors of the season:  hippocras\, a spiced wine flavored like cinnamon and ginger; a house-infused version of mulberry gin; and  aqua vitae – the water of life – brandy. And we’ll present the King’s Cake\, complete with a bean inside to crown our Lord of Misrule for the evening. \n6 PM: A Twelfth Night Feast from Chef Christian Van Etten\nChef Christian has gone full out with flavors for carnivores and vegivores…and he’s roasting a pig! \nSalad Course\nRed Currant\, Pear\, Arugula\, Dilled-Almond Salad with Local Maple Vinaigrette \nFor the Carnivores\nA Pig Roast\, Bedecked with Bay and Rosemary\nRainbow Carrots and Roasted Fall Root Vegetables\nButternut Sage Risotto alla Milanese \nFor the Vegivores\nOur Famous Mushroom Wellington with Plum Reduction\nRainbow Carrots and Roasted Fall Root Vegetables\nButternut Sage Risotto alla Milanese \nDessert\nHouse Made Pumpkin Tiramisu \n  \n7 PM: Twelfth Night\, by William Shakespeare & the Spillian Revelers Shakespeare Company\nWe will speak the speeches trippingly as we split the ears of the groundlings\, and our sides with laughing at our foolish selves as we bring the adventures of Viola\, Sebastian\, Sir Toby Belch\, and all of their loves and tormenters to life. Adapted and directed by Cat Yudain and Ian Potter\, theater artists from NYC and marriers at Spillian last summer! \n\n\nCat Yudain\nCat is thrilled to be back at Spillian with Ian! A sensory immersion\, this storytelling performance saturates audience members in an eerie odyssey to otherworldly realms guided only by the simple elements of sound\, light and spoken word. The piece is adapted and directed by Alex Harvey.  \nBorn in 1869\, Algernon Blackwood was the first pioneer of Supernatural Fiction and is renowned for his masterful atmospheric settings in his paranormal tales\, which submerge readers in the experience of the story itself. A member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn—a secret society devoted to the study of the occult and esoteric knowledge—Blackwood had an outsized and often underappreciated influence on the horror genre. The Willows creates a narrative bridge that connects gothic horror of the 19th century to psychological horror of the modern age. Blackwood’s ability to evoke dread from natural settings and his use of the unseen to generate fear lays the groundwork for modern horror’s exploration of existential dread. Blackwood was a major influence on H.P. Lovecraft\, who praised The Willows as “the finest supernatural tale in English literature.” \nSet on a flooding sandbar in the Danube as it crosses from Austria into Hungary\, the narrative of The Willows lures us into the disorienting inward journey of two campers on a summer canoe trip. Amidst the ceaseless and whispering dance of miles and miles of willow bushes along the river’s ancient banks\, these two adventurers are ensnared by forces that they dont understand. They are pulled\, as if by the hands of unseen specters\, into a realm where reality warps and the fabric of the known world frays into the inexplicable. Further and further they fall into the grasp of wild nature’s whim and closer to the edge of sanity. In its crescendo\, this odyssey leaves a haunting reminder of the fragile barrier that separates our mundane existence from the unfathomable mysteries that lie beyond. \n\nAbout Victoria Finney\nVictoria Finney performed all over the UK & Europe for many years with theatre companies including The English Shakespeare Company and Shared Experience\, appearing in several TV drama series and as a storyteller and Radio Rep actor for the BBC. Eventually Vicky moved to New York with her family.  Here she has been part of the Lake Lucille Chekhov project\, including the film “I am a Seagull”\, and has performed at The Lincoln Center and off Broadway. She co-founded Off The Page Arts-In-Education company\, taking experiential residencies into public schools all over the city. She co-adapted/directed All American Boys (now published and available from Playscripts) and has also co-adapted White Rose by Kip Wilson supported by The New Victory Theatre\, NYC and The Alliance Theatre\, Atlanta. She is currently featured as the narrator and storyteller on two popular children’s podcasts and plays a bunch of instruments and sings with Brooklyn based band\, The Retro Fits. \n  \nAbout Alex Harvey\nAlex Harvey is a filmmaker\, editor\, producer\, writer\, theater director\, musician\, end-of-life doula and currently the Arts Programmer at Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield\, MA. Alex created\, produced\, and directed the feature narrative film\, Walden: Life in the Woods starring Academy Award nominee Demián Bichir. The film played at a variety of domestic and international festivals including Whistler Film Festival\, Oaxaca Film Festival\, Denver International Film Festival\, River Run International Film Festival\, NCTE Houston\, FilmFort Idaho. Walden: Life in the Woods was picked up by Virgil Films and released on all Amazon Prime in October of 2019. Alex’s pandemic themed sci-fi feature\, space//space premiered in 2023 at the famed Anthology Film Archives in New York City. Alex also wrote and directed The Unsilent Picture\, a black and white silent film starring the world famous clown\, Bill Irwin.  The Unsilent Picture screened in an immersive spiegel tent accompanied by a live orchestral score and live foley sound performance as a centerpiece of the Horseman’s Hollow Festival in both 2018 and 2019. Alex was a co-director and producer for I Am A Seagull\, the documentary-narrative hybrid film made by the art collective Lake Lucille Chekhov Project. I Am A Seagull is the first feature film to have played at the Public Theatre’s Under the Radar Festival in New York. It has subsequently toured to the Spoleto Festival in Italy and The Noorderzon Festival in the Netherlands and the Kontakt Festival in Poland. In 2014\, Harvey was apprentice director under master director Allen Coulter on the fourth season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He has created various video art projects including one short film immersion called SONNET23 which was presented in 2015 at the Festival Cine Futuro in Salvador\, Brazil. I now make my home in Chichester\, NY\, on the banks of the Stony Clove Creek\, an aggressive double-haul from the historic Esopus Creek. \nLiving\, working\, and fly fishing in the “Cradle of American Fly Fishing” has sharpened my game\, taught me a bit of humility\, and given me an intimate knowledge of the region’s legendary rivers — Esopus\, Schoharie and the East and West Branches of the Delaware — and their tributaries. Exploring the rich fly fishing history and traditions of the Catskills — where it all began in America\, after all — has added another layer of enjoyment to the sport I love. \nI’ve heard it said that if you can find a way to make money doing something you love\, you’ll never have to work another day in your life. Sharing the excitement of fly fishing with others — young or old\, new or experienced — and maybe helping another individual catch the bug is my reward. That’s why I started Catskill Mountain Angler. \nLearn more here. \n  \nAbout Upstate Adventure Guides\nUpstate Adventure Guides have emerged as a preeminent licensed guide service in the Catskills and beyond. Co-founder Will Soter is the Vice President of the New York State Outdoor Guide Association\, hosts a weekly radio show on exploring the Catskills\, and is a regular contributor to various regional publications on the delights and challenges of hiking. \nUpstate Adventure Guides offers a range of options from interpretive nature walks\, to multi-day backpacking trips. We have programs for all ages\, and can custom tailor an experience for you\, or your group. \nLearn more here. \n  \nAbout Leigh Melander\, PhD\nAlong with being Spillian’s co-founder\, Leigh is a cultural mythologist\, presenter\, coach\, and creative artist. She offers workshops and organizational consulting on imagination and story nationally and at Spillian. She hosts a popular radio show (podcast coming soon!) called Myth America\, has appeared on national media as a mythology expert\, and is the Vice President of the Joseph Campbell Foundation. Her doctorate is in mythology and psychology\, and her first book\, Just That Side of Crazy\, is due out in early 2019. \nOur thanks to Esopus Creel for the gorgeous image for this event!
