The Winter Solstice: celebrated in essentially every culture world-wide since the Stone Age. Stonehenge, in the image, is one of the extraordinary monuments built to celebrate both winter and summer solstices.
The word solstice is from Latin – sol for sun and sistere, for standing still. In this moment, the world seems to stop and allow us to look backwards and forwards, at life and death, and celebrate the beginning of the return of light and spring even as we step further into winter.
